Alchemy and The Transmutation of Self
It’s not just about turning lead into gold!
Hello dear readers and devoted followers!
Welcome to another week of the Soul’s Journey, where we explore different areas of Human Design, the Gene Keys, and other paths toward experiencing our purpose.
This past week, alchemy and transmutation showed up in various unrelated parts of my life, so that was my sign to start writing.
Join me as we see there this takes us!

Alchemy - noun - the medieval forerunner of chemistry, based on the supposed transformation of matter. It was concerned particularly with attempts to convert base metals into gold or to find a universal elixir.
This is what most of us think about when we hear the word alchemy. We may even have thoughts about the sorcerer’s stone and elixir of life (as was made popular in the Harry Potter books).
Some, may have learned in further personal development studies that alchemy really refers more to inner transformation rather than eternal life or abundant riches. And while I believe this is true, what does “inner transformation” mean and how do we go about it?
Transmutation - noun - the action of changing or the state of being changed into another form.
More than simply becoming a better person: living healthier, thinking positive thoughts, meditating, etcetera, transmutation involves a fundamental shift from what we have been conditioned to be into how we are truly meant to be. Notice I didn’t mention “doing” anything. This is about how we are “being”.
The 47th Gene Key (Gate 47 in Human Design) resides in the Ajna Center, or the center of the Divine Translator. This is the center where we interpret ideas and make these thoughts manifest. How we are conditioned determines how we interpret the ideas that cross our mind. If we are conditioned to feel victimized, the ideas that come to us are then framed into a shroud of victimhood. If we are conditioned to be judgemental, the ideas will turn that direction.
The gift of Gene Key 47 is Transmutation. When we overcome our shadows, the various fears that have been conditioned into our mindset, we become an entirely new person. We learn to better interpret the ideas that enter our mind so that we may imagine ALL the possibilities on how those ideas will become reality.
This is not a one-time event. It is a series of mutations, a series of facing not only our different fears, but all the different ways they present in our life.
I have written about fear a few times. For example, in a previous article on The Judge and The Victim, I discussed the fears relating to the victim archetype. The victim may show up in different ways in different areas of your life. As you face each of these and shift your mindset around them, your way of being changes. With enough of these changes, you experience a fundamental shift in how you exist in the world. How you relate to others, and more importantly, how you relate to yourself goes through a fundamental change. You are no longer the same person with the same thought patterns as before.
This is why the individual study of Human Design is so important. It allows us to uncover the conditioned fears that haunt us and how we can shift our thinking and transform back to how we are designed to enjoy life. When we learn how to embrace our life fully, without holding ourselves back, we get to experience all of what we are designed to bring to the rest of the world.
This is what transmutation is about. This fundamental change in how we operate is what will bring riches to ourselves and others and a life that endures long past our time on earth.
