We live in an era of opportunities and possibilities.
The average Cable TV company offers about 200 channels and the average person watches about 20. In my experience when I had cable, it was far fewer than 20.
Wellness options include classes for yoga, Pilates, pole dancing, martial arts (of which there are many different styles), Zumba, and the list goes on.
We have Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkdIn, and TikTok… just for starters. Within those we have posts, reels, stories, long and short form writing.
Substack, originally a platform for writers, now offers audio and video.
Here’s the deal. You don’t have to do it all. Not for yourself and not for anyone else.
If you love the 20 cable channels you watch, then paying for the service (which happens to include 180 other channels) is worth it to you. Do you feel the need to watch all 200 channels to make your monthly bill worth it? I no longer have cable TV. I have two streaming apps, and even those are used infrequently. I sometimes think about missing hockey season, but not enough to warrant re-subscribing to cable.
Everyone told me I needed to do yoga for my body and mind. I tried it. I tried it again with a different instructor and different style. It wasn’t my thing. Aerobic style exercise like Zumba wasn’t it either. For many years, the focused movement of Tai Chi was a perfect fit for me (even though secretly I still felt pressured to love yoga the way my friends and colleagues did).
For business these days, especially virtual services like writing or coaching, it’s rare to not need any type of social media. So which do you choose? (Hint: you don’t need to be on all of them!) I’m still paring down the list of platforms I share my business on. For now, it’s Facebook and Instagram. I’ve not found much traction on LinkdIn so I’ve pretty much dropped that. Even Facebook is more for keeping up with business related groups rather than my own posting.
A friend introduced me to Substack about two years ago. I instantly fell in love! I started writing again and enjoy the community and support of other writers. I’ve also dabbled in podcasting. Recently, though, they added audio (where you can record your writing for those who may prefer to listen rather than read) and live video. My first thought was, *sigh* something else I need to do. Then I realized, no I don’t.
It’s ok to pick and choose
Not only is it ok, but it’s necessary to be truly you.
If you don’t like yoga, but hula classes light you up, then choose what feels best to you.
If you really enjoy watching Canadian nature shows and Indian soap operas, then watch them.
If you love performing on live short video, then drop the social platforms that don’t fit that style.
And for goodness’ sake, if you are a long form writer and love Substack for the space it gives you and your audience, then write to your heart’s content and don’t worry about audio and video.
There is so much opportunity and choice out there in the world. Choose what you want and ignore the rest. They are simply bugs on the windshield.
Focusing on the bugs on the windshield only distracts you from focusing on following your path.
And why you need to
You have strengths and weaknesses.
You have interests and aversions.
Your purpose is unique to you.
Your journey can only be walked by you.
To be happy, successful, and fulfill the life you are meant to live, you need to choose your life in alignment with these. To do otherwise, to force puzzle pieces that don’t fit into your picture, the world wont get to experience the real picture of you.
What are your thoughts on all the choices available in life and how it’s changed our perspective?
And, if you’re a creator on Substack, I’d love to hear your take on the new options for content?
This fall I’ll be leading a private online group to explore your Human Design and learn how to understand and apply the different facets to your daily life.
✨If you’d like an invite to the group when it begins in October, comment below or message me privately. I’ll send you a link to run your free human design chart and basic report so you can start exploring before we begin.
✨I’m limiting the group size to 15 members to start so everyone can feel comfortable asking questions, discussing their challenges, and get answers without feeling lost in the crowd.
✨The group will primarily be in chat format and we’ll go live together only on occasion so times zone differences won’t be a big issue.
Let me know before September 30th if you’d like to be a part of this initial group. My vision is for it to eventually expand so that those who have been in a while and have learned a bit, can then help others newer to the group.
i feel like i’m at an intermediate level on interpreting human design but would still like an invite to the group!
