Doing the Inner Work in Full View
How to bring your inner work out of the shadows and into your every day life.
Teacher and gurus talk a lot about doing the inner work, that shadow work that goes deep inside to heal our core wounds. But once we’re in there mucking about, how does that help us in our every day life?
Sure, there are some things that we want to heal that we don’t want to share with the world, but only by bringing the healing process into the light of our daily lives can we truly heal. Otherwise it’s all just theoretical.
Here’s an example:
You have a trauma about speaking up and standing up for yourself. This may have started with your parents and maybe continued into your adult relationships. You do throat chakra work. You study the Storyteller archetype and it’s shadow. You do mirror exercises.
In your mind you identify as having issues about being seen and heard, but you never actually break out of that identity.
Understanding your trauma, learning about where it came from, and recognizing how it shows up in your life is just the beginning!
The most important next step is figuring out how to make a change and then implementing it.
Let’s go back to the speaking up example.
So, say you find yourself not speaking out because your ideas seem to be brushed aside, or you find yourself butting in to conversations to get your ideas heard, only to still have your voice ignored. These are common challenges of those with open or undefined Throat Centers (Generators, Reflectors, and some Projectors). For you it’s all about timing and surrender.
As a Projector, are you waiting to be acknowledged or invited before you speak? This can be difficult due to the Projector’s intuitive knowing and wisdom. They can often see problems and solutions before others and don’t understand why their advice isn’t always accepted.
Similarly, Generators need to stay in tune with their timing as well. Trying to force your will without waiting to respond will only end up in frustration. Inserting yourself or your ideas into a conversation will often be met with resistance.
Rather than shutting down your voice, as in this scenario, you need to learn to work with the timing of your communication so that you will communicate at the most effective time and be heard. Practice working with your type and authority to get in the habit of using right timing to ensure you are heard when and how you need to be.
This is just one example of bringing your inner work out to the world. What are some other examples of inner work you’ve done, but haven’t quite figured out how to bring that knowledge into every day life and get past the trauma?
