Feeling Like a Hamster in Yoga Class
What it’s like being high energy in a world telling you to slow down
Happy Tuesday!
When have you felt like you just didn’t fit into the mold of “how things are supposed to be”? If you’re like me, it’s pretty often! Being in the personal development industry, my peers all seem to be into meditation. Don’t get me wrong, meditation is an amazing practice both for stress and mental well-being… but not for me. At least, not in the way many practitioners teach it.
Read on and share your experiences with how you fit in (or don’t) with traditional personal development practices.
Here’s to being a square peg in a round hole!
~Suzanne
I’ve never been able to sit in quiet meditation, at least not how I was taught it was supposed to be.
The most meditative times I can recall in recent memory were paddling my kayak on a quiet lake early in the morning. There might be one or two fishermen around in their boats or a muskrat swimming about, but otherwise, deserted.
The quiet was calming, but I wasn’t just sitting. I needed my body moving, paddling, expending energy, to truly be in a state of calm
This flies in the face of sitting in lotus position with no other outside noise, except maybe some instrumental music, just listening to and feeling your breath. But for me, moving is meditation.
I’ve studied my self since my early 20’s. Mythology, archetypes, spirituality, religion, movement, personality. I’ve done personality assessments, gone to therapy, been coached, attended classes, and participated in spiritual gatherings.
All have taught me bits about my self, but the most important thing I learned was that how it’s supposed to be isn’t necessarily reality for me, or for many people.
Exploring my Human Design…
➡️As a Manifesting Generator, I have a lot of energy that needs to be expelled.
➡️My variables show me that my need to be active in order to relax is exactly what I need to do
So what does this mean? It means that I needed to find my own path, my own methods of achieving the benefits of meditation.
As I mentioned, sitting meditation didn’t work for me, but moving did. Walks in the woods or kayaking on a quiet lake.
The same goes for yoga.
So many of my colleagues practice yoga and many even teach it. I’ve tried various forms, and it’s a lovely way to stay in shape physically and mentally, but it was too slow for me. I’d get antsy, wanting to move more than hold positions.
I had studied various martial arts in my youth and growing up I used to love watching the older folks practicing Tai Chi in the park. Once I decided to try it myself (not until my late 30’s) I knew this was “my yoga”! Eventually I even became an instructor.
The lesson here:
Learn about yourself and appreciate your strengths before falling into the trap of “I’m not good enough”.

“Learn about yourself and appreciate your strengths before falling into the trap of “I’m not good enough”.” - I love the encouragement to lean into what feels good for you, not matter what those around you are doing. It’s a permission slip to see yourself and your needs. So so so important. 💕
