Myths and Lies About Finding Your Life Purpose
It’s not what you do with your life, but how you do it!
Ok, so I’ve already given you the key. Your life’s purpose isn't about what you do in your life, but how you do it! There are so many promises about how amazing your life will be if only could find your purpose, and if life isn't amazing, you probably haven’t found it yet.
Purpose is not really the best word for this. Your mission, maybe, but even that implies completing an action. Your purpose is about how you share your gifts with the world and what you need to feel fulfilled. It’s being more than doing.
We are born with certain gifts or strengths, and when we utilize these gifts fully, we are holding the space in the universe we were designed to be.
Using the puzzle piece analogy from a previous post, if you are a beautiful blue sky puzzle piece, you make the whole picture better when you place yourself in the sky section of the puzzle that fits you. It’s an easy fit. But, if you try to place yourself in the grassy area of the puzzle, you might find a space that fits the shape of your piece, but it will never feel “quite right”, and it doesn’t serve the bigger picture (especially for the piece whose space you’ve taken!)
Here are some myths and truths about what your life purpose is and isn’t…
Myth: Finding your life purpose will make your life easier.
Truth: Yes… and no. When you are living in integrity and in alignment with your gifts, life will seem to flow more easily and you may experience more enjoyment in what you do, but this doesn’t mean that all your problems will disappear. You may have a better understanding of how to move through problems and roadblocks, and you may avoid some, but life is life. There will be ups and downs, successes and setbacks. When you understand your purpose/gifts/strengths you are better equipped to handle all of it.
Myth: Finding the right career will fulfill your life purpose.
Truth: Your purpose is not your career, however, you can live out your purpose through your chosen career. For example, if your purpose is “to explore and implement new ideas that break old patterns and inspire others to do the same”, you might live out this purpose as a teacher, an inventor, an interior designer, an artist, or a full time parent. So you see, our purpose is how we share our career or life’s work rather than what career we choose.
Myth: Finding your purpose will explain why you are here and what you are meant to do.
Truth: Again, finding your purpose will help you understand how to live a life in alignment with your gifts and values, more than why you are here. Why are you here? You are here because you were born here. You will still be here even if you are not living your purpose. But, living on purpose gives meaning behind how you do what you do and how you share your unique gifts with the world. This may seem like a fine line, but it’s an important one.
So how then do I find my life purpose?
There are many ways to explore. Asking yourself what is truly important to you is a start. What makes you feel good? What comes easy to you? What have others told you that you do well or have a “gift” of? (Not the job you perform well, but the intangibles, how you show up, like your compassion, listening skills, leadership abilities).
Your purpose can be applied to any job or career.
You can also explore various jobs you’ve had and tasks you’ve completed. Which of these resonated with you? What did you like or dislike, enjoy or find difficult about each?
One shortcut to getting an idea of your life purpose is to explore your Incarnation Cross. This is a piece of your Human Design chart that gives you some strong clues as to your gifts and how to use them most effectively.
Have you discovered your purpose? Or have you found a path toward sharing your gifts with the world? I’d love to hear about what you’ve discovered and how you’re sharing yourself and your gifts!
