3 Reasons Resolutions Don’t Work and 3 Steps to Make Lasting Changes in Your Life
We do this every year. Like clockwork, on January 1st we decide to change our lives for the better.
We set health and fitness goals.
We set career and income goals.
We set relationship goals.
We are so excited by the fresh start, why is it that we fall off the wagon and quit by February 1st (if we even make it that far)?
Here’s what doesn’t work:
You’re only motivated by the hype and excitement for the “new year/new you” so there’s no real goal and therefore no lasting drive.
You’re waiting for, and working on someone else’s timeline. Why January 1st? Why not today if you’re really feeling a need for change?
These aren’t really your goals, so like #1 there’s no real motivation for you to complete them. You want to start exercising on January 1st… why? What’s the end result you want?
Here’s what works:
You have a dream. There’s something you wish to do or be and it’s something that has deep-seated meaning for you. When there’s an inner drive, you have true motivation to achieve something.
You become resolved to make this dream come true. The time is right, you’re feeling it, now it has to happen no matter what. Resolution - look it up in the dictionary. When you know, you know. There will be no waiting for January 1st or any other day. The only time that will matter is now.
You put the steps in place to achieve the goal. You have the dream and the desire, now it’s time to make it happen. This is the tricky part for some. The dream-turned-goal is so big, you don’t know how to start. This is where you either break down the steps on your own, or find a coach or a friend who’s done it before to help you find your starting point.
Often we never get to step 3 - starting the steps - because we never explored step 1 - having a dream. We don’t know what we want. We don’t allow ourselves to dream or hope or wish. So before committing yourself to another round of failed New Year’s resolutions, take some time to dream and find what’s really in your heart to have or do in your life.
