There was a time when when we all lived in tune with the seasons.  There was no beginning or end, just an ongoing cycle where one season blended into the next, each preparing us for the next stage.
The Dark Season
From Samhain (October 31) to Yule/Winter Solstice (December 21) I call the dark season.  For some, this is the 4th quarter (Q4 in business) where the culmination of all the marketing, advertising, and groundwork you’ve laid all year comes to fruition. Many businesses generate more income in this quarter than in the other three quarters combined.
For me, this is a time of rest and reflection. This 8 weeks is a long awaited, and much deserved rest to enjoy the fruits of my labors all year.  Whether I had a productive year or not, this is my time to look back and assess.
Just as the darkness of the new moon calls me to rest each month, this dark season of Samhain is the same but on a larger scale.
This is my time to begin contemplating what the focus or theme of the next year will be. It’s a time to decide whether to continue on the same path, or turn left at the next fork in the road. Is there a new project taking seed in my heart? Or is it the next phase of a current project?
When plants go dormant in the winter months, they aren’t dead. They are hibernating, gathering their strength in order to burst forth and flourish when the light returns. So too, this season, for me, is a time to go dark and regenerate. It’s not a time to stop working, but to work in a different way, going quiet and laying new foundations for the year to come.
I look at what worked, what didn’t work, and why.
I acknowledge my successes and contemplate my failures.
I check into myself and see what may be holding me back and where I’m not living authentically.
Just as the trees lose their leaves and flowers dies off, we also need to let go of, or prune off, what doesn’t serve us any longer so that we can grow again when the light returns.
Living with the seasons is also living intuitively. It’s following the inner voices and the outer shifts, looking and listening for signs that point us in the right direction.
