Slowing Down to The Speed of Emotions
Shifting from a life at the speed of thinking to a life at the speed of feeling
Most of us live life at the speed of thought. It’s a fast-paced environment driven by fast paced thoughts and stimuli. Instant synapses, electromagnetic impulses prompted by outer stimuli: video screens, talking heads, snappy headlines.
When we downshift into our emotions, we are forced to slow down. Feelings ebb and flow. They pulse, like a heart beating or a lung breathing.
While ideas flit through our minds (and across our screens) and we try to chase them down and make decisions based on these fleeting thoughts, we often get caught up in the moment, making decisions that are following someone else’s narrative.
We react to this external stimuli, rather than respond based on our inner knowing.
In reacting, we are allowing the stimuli to dictate the outcome.
In responding, we get to fully participate in the decision.
When we slow down and allow ourselves to process what is happening around us, we are better able to understand what is being offered and determine whether it requires a response from us.
Take social media ads for example.
A product is flashed on the screen with all of its features and hype, and, it’s even on sale, but only for today. You will save 20%… but only if you purchase within the next 30 minutes. You will look like… feel like… experience… but only if you purchase this product… now!
10 minutes ago, you never considered you needed to look like… feel like… or experience….
10 minutes ago, the price of that item was not a concern to you because it wasn’t something you needed.
10 minutes ago, you didn’t feel you were missing out.
Whether you are intuitive and respond best by following your feelings or emotional and respond by allowing your emotional waves time to process, responding using your body instead of your mind will result in clearer decisions that will be more beneficial in the long run.
Your mind takes in the stimuli from the ad and either tries to make the decision for you (act now or you’ll miss out!) or, you allow the information your mind gathered settle into your body for a clearer decision making process.
Was I in need of the item when it was full price? Am I really in need of it because it’s on sale? What does my gut say? What do my emotions say? What does my heart say?
Did I feel like I was missing out by not looking like… feeling like… experiencing… before I saw the ad? Have my feelings changed now? Am I missing out if I don’t have this?
Slowing down to the speed of emotions allows you to experience more of life on your terms. It allows you to feel what you truly want and need to experience in life. And it takes away the pressure brought on by allowing the mind to act on the information it gathers in the moment.
