I often find myself contemplating lyrics from Rush songs. Neil Peart, drummer for the band Rush, had such a deep understanding of the nature of humans and his eloquence with language translated into some of the greatest songs ever written about the human condition.
We’re only immortal for a limited time. -Neil Peart
It was 1979 or thereabouts. I was in my bedroom listening to an eclectic assortment of vinyl records having raided my mom’s record collection and squirreled them away to my own stash.
A favorite album was A Farewell to Kings by some band called Rush. At the time I knew nothing about them, but I loved their music. Closer to the Heart was my favorite song on that album and listened to it repeatedly.
Even back then at age 11, the idea of putting your heart into all you do, and knowing that everyone has a unique part to play, was a theme in my life.

The first program I wrote for my clients as a new coach in 1999 was titled Finding Balance, Finding Truth: 25 steps to regaining control of your time and your life. It was about how to stop doing the things that don’t bring you joy so you can then start doing the things that do. Eventually, it became my first published book.
Fast forward another 25 years…
Rush’s lyrics still speak to me and influence my work. My coaching still revolves around following your heart, letting go of the shoulds, and making time for what you love doing.
It’s all about the choices you make in this limited time we have on this earth.
For more on choices (and another Rush reference) join me on a trip back to a post from October 2024…
If You Choose Not To Decide, You Still Have Made a Choice
