There was a time when when we all lived in tune with the seasons. There was no beginning or end, just an ongoing cycle where one season blended into the next, each preparing us for the next stage.
From Yule/Winter Solstice (December 21) to Imbolc (February 2) is the time of the returning light. We have passed the longest night and light is returning. In the old traditions, animals that have bedded down during the dark months will be giving birth in time for the new growth of grass (this new grass is needed to produce milk for the babies).
This is a time of preparation.
I sometimes miss the snow (though not often!). During dark, snowed-in days where the streets were impassable and I was hunkered down at home, I enjoyed the quiet.
The snow has an insulating feel, like you’re wrapped up safe and nothing can get in. I used to spend this time thinking, writing, deciding what to do next in life… after the thaw. I would prepare comforting meals for now and put up preserves and fermented foods for later. I would sit, usually in silence, preparing for the new year and new opportunities to come.
Living in the south, the dark, quiet, cold days are fewer but I still enjoy taking this time (while everyone else is bustling about for the holidays) to just sit and think.
The dreams you dreamed during the dark season are ready to be manifested. Did you dream of changing careers in the coming year? Did you decide to write your book? Did you decide to train for a marathon?
Now is the time for laying the foundation and getting the ball rolling.
When you uncovered your “darkness” last season, you likely discovered what you needed to bring you out of that dark space… breaking old habits, setting boundaries, honoring your needs and gifts. Explore what it will take to set these new directions and start moving toward them. This isn’t the time to jump in and rush headstrong into a haphazard plan. It’s a time of realization, a time to discover your motivation for making the changes and let that motivation brew within you until it has nowhere else to go except out where you will take action on it.
What are your plans for the new year? What new ventures will you bring into your life in 2025?
Living with the seasons is also living intuitively. It’s following the inner voices and the outer shifts, looking and listening for signs that point us in the right direction.
